I will NEVER go into a hospital without seeing a different picture again. Fantastic writing, wonderful descriptions and an eye opener I never saw coming. I always have said I thought the Doctor in Viet Nam must have sewed me up with burlap. Now I'm grateful he HAD burlap. Excellent book.
This was really funny and I had some of the same experiences in training. In fact I wish I had read it beforehand so I could have kept more humor and perspective: "they" really do try to kill you! Also, families of residents would benefit from hearing some of the stories. Then they might understand why their resident is so stressed out and has a different outlook than every other person on the planet. It's because you aren't allowed to be human or a person when you are a resident.Good insight too on how the new generations do not want to be like the old surgeons. I hear the old guys talk with just the same machismo as frat boys who not only endure but inflict hazing rituals; they all swear it's necessary to doing the job, no matter how dehumanizing and abusive it is. I don't have a great plan for changing this, but as the theme of the book says, "you can't stop the clock". Eventually those surgeons will pass on…
This book was such a great read! Being an ICU nurse and having done a few travel contracts at Highland, I wasn't crazy about the descriptions of the nurses. However, there are pickles everywhere and that place, while fun and interesting, is no exception. I had thought I wanted to do Music/Pre Med in college, but Physics (a class I probably wouldn't have used again anyways) cleansed me of that dream rather expediently. Reading this, along with the tales from my friends who COULD pass Physics, however, make me glad I didn't make it because of the hours. I'm no stranger to 16 hour shifts, but the 120 hour a week nonsense would have probably gotten me dropped for behavioral reasons pretty quickly. This was one of the most enjoyable books I've read in a long time!
Having been a nurse for 42 years, 17 of which were working with residents,I can tell you that this book is a gratifying peek into the life of an intern! Told with humor and pathos, we grow to love (and feel sorry for!) the author as he navigates the emotionally draining life (or lack thereof) of training to be a surgeon. I highly recommend this book to anyone in the medical profession, but those who aren't may have difficulty understanding it (although he explains procedures and terminology very well). I was amazed at the way he was treated though! It truly was "the year they tried to kill me"!!
"The year they tried to kill me" was truly one of the funniest books I have read in years, maybe ever. I found myself experiencing waves of belly laughs like I haven't since a kid. As a nurse myself, I identify with scenes that show that a good percentage of patients are those who neglect themselves horribly. While I recoil at some things people do to others, the same holds true for what people can do or neglect in themselves. I have always wondered how some doctors can keep a complete poker face in the face of tumult, now I know, if like Sal, they have all kinds of humorous creative scenerios playing out in their minds to neutralize the horror of suffering, impending death and other Dr.'s egos. Despite the genuinely repulsive symptoms sometimes presented such as butt-pus, gaping wounds and extensive burns, it was tragic for me when the book ended. I will grieve the loss of Dr. Iaquinta's unique humor about the ridiculousness embedded in daily life and his determination to maintain integrity in situations which might make others callous or disillusioned. I think it horrendous that we expect interns to go without sleep. How does that help anything, including our own lives?
What a great book. I guess I particularly enjoyed because it reminded me so much of my own intern years. The exhaustion the fears and the joy of accomplishment offset against trying to maintain so in a long distance relationship make this book so special. I wish it didn't, end.
It was a Fun read! He has a wonderful sense of humor. I evn laughed ouy loud while reading! I would loved to have him around during my nursing career. I bet he is or was a great doctor!! You had better have a great sense of the funny when you see and hear all the crazy things people do to themselves or each other! I know as I worked in psych much of my career!!!!
Well-written and engaging. Not my usual genre, but a very interesting look inside a new doctor's internship. While it is somewhat similar to the various medical TV programs, it is much more about the day to day medicine, the patients, and the intern's relationships with the hierarchy of doctors, their various management styles, successes and foibles. We learn some coping and survival strategies employed through an intensive year long schedule. I liked the adage, often repeated in the book, "the clock doesn't stop, " a kind of survival mantra that keeps everything and everyone going. Good read!
