Though hospice has been around for 50 years it was not offered to my family when my father was dying of cancer in 1980 in Canada. We kept him at home as long as possible, but finally could not manage on our own, and had to have him hospitalized. He died two days later without us at his bedside. But last year when my brother-in-law succumbed to heart disease, he was at home with his family who literally held his hand when he took his last breaths. The hospice nurse "read" his breathing and told the family to take his hands, that he was leaving this life. What a difference hospice care made for my brother-in-law's wife and children, and for my brother-in-law himself!Paula Wrenn has written such an intimate and honest account of what she and her husband went through after his cancer diagnosis that that alone would make an important book about what happens when the thing we fear most comes knocking at our door. But with contributions and the professional point of view from Jo Gustely, Paula's husband's hospice nurse, this book gets into new territory about life's end and how to make it a good one. It is full of practical information and resources. Westerners put off the conversation about death even though we know it is coming for all of us. I highly recommend this book and wish we'd had it when my father's time came.
As a former caregiver, I wish that the concise, accurate information presented in this easy-to-read book had been available at a time when I needed it. It provides a myriad of options from making end of life's important decisions, advance planning, palliative care choices, and helping to ease the stress and suffering at this critical time in life. This is an overwhelming time in life, Dying Well with Hospice is a gift to both the patient and to family members, guiding them through this time step-by-step with solid information and support. Bravo Paula Wren and Jo Gustely ~ and thank you for this gift - a must read for every family at any time in life.
I've always had a fear of death and dying, with questions I was always afraid to ask. Your book has helped me understand so much because of the way you shared this painful journey with your husband...in detail, from the beginning to even after he died, including all the hardships and humor. I learned so very much from it and from his hospice nurse's teachings...revolutionary things to me. I highly recommend this book to everyone regardless of your current situation in life. I encourage you to read it.
As a former caregiver to my wife who was two years on Hospice I can attest to the writings of“ Dying well with Hospice “ as an very expertly clearly written book for all of us who will experience one day, with a loved one or one's own, the experience of dying. I applaud Jo and Paula for their gift of telling us in detail the truth how to face and know the dying process. This book will help many to get their questions answered before it is most needed.Joachim KotheDying Well with Hospice: A Compassionate Guide to End of Life Care
This book has two wonderful, useful components. One author (Paula) bravely shares her personal experiences with terminally ill spouse and the other author (Jo) explains her position and offers advice from her experience as a hospice nurse. There are numerous resources throughout the book to help navigate confusing days that face both patient, caregiver and other loved ones. I was particularly touched by the honest answers that Jo was able to provide to this family - sometimes it is the unknown that is the most frightening. I wish my parents had a "Jo" in their lives as preparations and choices enabling us to die peacefully and with dignity. This book can allay many fears and "what ifs" . I recommend it as a mini-guidebook for caregivers, family members and patients.
An excellent book that helps each and everyone of us prepare for end of life--because we all know it's coming sometime.
A timeless book that came into my life at the right time. I recommend EVERYONE read this for valuable information you may need someday, for a loved one or for yourself.
Wonderful book. Well written with compassionate insight and personal experiences. Highly recommend.
