As a 70-year-old practicing physician with 100-hour work weeks and a 4-year-old daughter, I don’t have much time for non-medical reading. I am in the Florida Keys attending a medical conference and I bought along a copy of Barabasi’s “The Formula†for my occasional non-medical reading. Once I started reading the book, I simply couldn’t put it down. Barabasi has written one of the most insightful and profound books that I have ever read. His slicing and dicing of big data to unravel the secrets of success are truly astonishing and groundbreaking. He has given me insights into how to shoot for success in my field of medicine even at my ripe old age (read the book about law number 5). His laws apply to just about any field from shoemaker to atomic physicist. If you want to be successful in life (and who doesn’t), you absolutely must read this book if you don’t want to be left in the dustbin of history.
As a scientist myself, I was dubious of the book's claim to have a formula for success. If you've lived more that a few decades, you are well aware of the vagrancies of fate, and how success and failure seem to be an integral part of chaos theory. But the book delivers in the end, and I can see my own experiences reflected in the laws. The examples presented are incredibly interesting, ranging from so-called wine experts to tennis players to WWI aces and more. These work well to showcase the various laws of success. Best of all, the laws are something that you can actually apply in life, and I bought my 17-year old daughter a copy of the book to hopefully get her off to a good start. One of the only findings I question is in regard to Amazon.com reviews. According to the book, the first review on Amazon is tremendously important to sales and how the book is received. But as a published author, I am keenly aware that the first few reviews are almost always by friends and family (or even the by the author, as pointed out in The Formula!). You can usually identify these reviews because they are brief and general in nature, mainly because the reviewer didn't actually read the book. Maybe the general public doesn't factor this in, so the finding may still be true. At any rate, The Formula is a great read and a great example of how science can make sense of seemingly impenetrable problems.
Those of us who try to be the best in our profession realize performance is difficult to measure in many cases. Unless you’re an athlete, measuring the performance of a lawyer, law student, or businessman is difficult. Many have excellent characteristics in addition to drawbacks. As a professor we experience that issue when trying to evaluate students. Having taught for over 30 years the question arises: which one of my students, or which ones, will become successful when all will be qualified to practice law or run a business? The analysis in this book helps answer that question. I’m a believer in networking, it is created numerous opportunities for myself and for other professionals I work with. If you have the fundamental skills networking allows you to display them to potential clients, investors, and employers. The book realizes many professions are difficult to measure when looking at competency and excellence. I agree with the thesis, networking and taking advantage of opportunities seems to separate those who are persistent and are extremely successful from those who just make a living.
What a wonderful book. The Formula distinguishes between performance and success and provides very useful insights for new companies or scientists on how to jumpstart their success. Intended for the lay reader rather than Dr. Barabasi’s colleagues in network theory, The Formula is well written and shows how the rules for success apply across disciplines and boundaries and how they can be managed to our benefit.Beyond that, it showed why I was wrong early in my career when participating in a Horizon TV show on biomechanics produced by the BBC. In a late night discussion with the producer, I said I hoped the show and our research on the function of sharkskin in locomotion was a big success because nobody over 30 did anything really new. Our producer disagreed, saying the unifying characteristic of people making important contributions, early or late in their careers, was they were new to the field. He cited the example of an electron microscopist at the NY Blood Bank who was puzzled by particles showing up in his micrographs, so he isolated them and found they were a strain of hepatitis that was rare in NY but that was ravaging parts of Africa. Not stopping there, without formal virology training he went on to raise a vaccine where many others had failed. So people with the ability to perform can and do move between fields, going from success to success even after the age of 30. :-)Dr. Barabasi's research also shows the need for doggedness given the inherently conservative nature of a grant reviewer faced with something new.
A remarkable and empowering read, and very much unlike anything I’ve picked up before on the topic. As Barabasi says early on, it’s not a self-help book, but a science book in which the topic of study is success. It’s 100% about following the data rather than relying on anecdotes. Expect some mind-shifting insights about how humans actually reward work or ignore it. I’ve already used a couple of its lessons to shift how I market myself and my consulting. Incredibly insightful.
