Review
“Attica Locke’s first novel, Black Water Rising, which Janet Maslin called ‘subtle and compelling’ in The New York Times, is an even better book than its author had in mind...The book cleverly replaces the kind of cold-war paranoia that used to animate thrillers with racial paranoia instead.” (New York Times)“Black Water Rising reads like a hard-boiled thriller, but the real trick resides in Locke’s ability to personalize an overlooked part of American history and show how far-reaching, how entrenched, it is in today’s social, political, and cultural fabric.” (San Francisco Bay Guardian)“First-novelist Locke presents a searing portrait of a man struggling to reconcile the bitterness of his life experiences with the idealism of his convictions. Like Dennis Lehane, she skillfully deploys the conventions of the thriller while also presenting biting social commentary, a sure sense of place, and soulful characters.” (Booklist (starred review))“Attica Locke is a vivid storyteller. . . .Without pretence, she provides an engaging story about one man’s enduring struggle for justice and equality. It’s a must for your summer reading list.” (Lisa Ko, author of The Leavers)“Locke shines . . . this is a rare occasion where the hype is deserved. . . . Locke seamlessly weaves history, suspense, and passion in this promising tale that will linger long after this season.” (Essence)“Locke expertly etches a portrait of her anxiety-ridden protagonist, and she animates the complex plot with the assurance of a practiced screenwriter.” (Kirkus Reviews)“Locke, a screenwriter with both film and TV credits (including a forthcoming HBO miniseries about the civil rights movement) steers a gritty drama to a satisfying end . . . Locke remains an author to watch.” (Publishers Weekly)“Locke’s debut thriller ends in a satisfying whirlwind of drama.” (Library Journal)“This debut thriller charges out of the gate, boldly establishing Locke as a name to look out for in years to come.” (Sarah Weinman, National Post)“Locke gives readers a well-paced suspense tale. . . . Let’s hope Locke has more novels in her. Any author who can make readers actually like a low-rent lawyer has talent to spare.” (St. Louis Post-Dispatch)

Intricate and interesting story but took off 1 star for having the main character repeatedly brutally beaten and able to continue with only minor mention of bruises by others. I took off another star for jarring geographical mentions that are not an issue for most readers, but make we wonder how accurately she has presented the Civil Rights Movement in Houston.Katy is due west of Houston and both are in what's known as the Coastal Bend of Texas. Early the author asserts two main characters are from rural East Texas. Jay is from Nigton which is East Texas but Cynthia is from Katy which is rural but not East Texas. The other is that Jay in a courtroom speculating that the judge may even have a life after work, may even drive to a country and western foot- stomping club in Victoria. What? Victoria is 2 hours from Houston and there's plenty of places to go drinking and dancing without driving 2 hours back home tired and under the influence.Victoria got mentioned much earlier as Jay's remembering a client who wanted to pay legal fees with fresh buttermilk delivered monthly from an uncles farm in Victoria.Other than those 2 mentions Victoria plays no part in the story and I wonder why the references. Both could easily be tied to some closer town, even towns with interesting names. Perhaps in an earlier draft there was a viable connection between the story and Victoria. The geographic flaws won't detract for everyone not familiar with the area, but my Momma was raised in Victoria, I went to high school in Victoria, and my ancestors were in the area before the Texas Revolution.
I was excited to read this book after reading The Cutting Season. But it’s as if the writer struggled to figure out who her own characters were. This book began so slow that I put it down & I thought I’d never finish. But I rarely do not finish a book so in that spirit I continued reading, continued hoping the main character, Jay, would figure himself out and clue us the reader in. This book fishtails and nose dives into nothingness. It is incredulous and filled with so many mistakes it’s crazy. An example is she said phone records could only be gotten for the past 60 days. Then she said Jay was able to review months and months of calls. She said Jay was found innocent of an earlier charge, but yet he referred to himself as a felon. Just Don’t bother. 2 stars for trying.
This is a good read, particularly if you are from Houston, Texas. Very detailed about the city and the times it describes. The mayor is a take off on Kathy Whitmire, 3 term mayor, the oil companies influence and the dark side of big business and the race issues that still divide not only Houston but the country in the workplace and the community. The book leads you on a twisting path of a former political radical (and former lover of the Mayor) who gets dragged into a complex and dangerous plot involving oil, shipping, real estate, murder, strikes and political intrigue. It is a little labored in moving the plot sometimes, but over all it will keep your interest and make you root for the flawed hero.
In her debut novel, Black Water Rising, Attica Locke gives us a literary thriller that grabs us from the opening page to the last page. It is Houston, Texas 1981 and Jay Porter, a struggling lawyer without two pennies to rub together, is about to take his pregnant wife on a boat ride on the bayou as a birthday celebration. As if they both have foresight of what is to come, each is hesitant for their own reasons on whether they should take this trip. Jay wonders if this will meet his wife's expectations. Bernie, his wife, wonders if the boat will survive the trip but she does not want her husband to be disappointed. But those thoughts are thrown aside as Jay pulls a drowning woman out of the water. He knows this is the right thing to do, but his inner voice and past tells him, he should not have gotten involved with a white woman running away from the black side of town. After leaving the woman on the police station steps, Jay and Bernie go home. But Jay cannot leave well enough alone, and wants to know more about this woman and as each clue he uncovers brings danger to him and his family, Jay wonders if he can turn away before he is drawn back into his past which he was barely able to survive. This book provides us with a wonderful treat as besides the mystery story to be solved, there is the story of how Jay became the person that he is. It is a story about young people taking charge to bring about social change in the 1970s and how the establishment used their power to make sure that this change did not happen. This storyline is blended seamlessly with the mystery story and shows us that while things change the more things remain the same. The author did an excellent job of presenting time and location. The reader is transported to Houston and along with the heat and humidity will feel Houston's growing pains as she comes into her own as an oil power town. There are a variety of characters, some you will love and some you will dislike. However, I would like to have learned more about Bernie, as at times I did not understand her behavior, especially when she was in danger.I enjoyed this book and while the action in the book is centered in the 1970s and 1980s, it is very current with our times as we examine the connection between government, business and energy and the struggle between greed and doing what is right. I recommend this book to readers who enjoy thrillers, mysteries and storylines with contemporary themes.Reviewed by BeverlyAPOOO BookClubMarch 18, 2009
I read the Cutting Season and really liked Attica Locke's writing. I had higher expectations for this book, maybe. It was good, but not great. I think I liked the Cutting Season better, though I can't say why. I still liked this book, and will probably read the next one. I enjoy the sense of "place" in her writing, and the way she weaves social/racial issues into the various mysteries. I am still on the fence about Jay Porter... maybe less believable than I would like. He grew on me as the book progressed.
